Oral Hygiene and Preventative Care

As practitioners we are totally dedicated to the maintenance and enhancement of our patient’s oral health, comfort and wellbeing.

Unless you are already under the care of another dentist and have access to your records your first appointment with us will be spent undertaking a comprehensive examination which will include:

  • A review of your medical history
  • A soft tissue assessment
  • An assessment of your jaw joint
  • A complete tooth charting and record
  • Relevant x-ray images
  • Diagnostic study models (if required)
  • Photographs (if required)
  • Periodontal charting

The goal of this process is to develop an accurate baseline of your dental status. This will allow us to formulate a prioritised treatment plan consistent with your requirements and desires

Depending on the results of your first visit, your second appointment with us will be for a thorough clean by our dedicated dental hygienists and consultation with your St Quentin Dentist.

We have always believed that maintaining a healthy oral environment is essential for the long-term retention of teeth, so St Quentin were one of the first practices in Western Australia to embrace preventative dentistry. We established a dedicated Dental Hygiene department to maintain and improve the health of our patients’ teeth and gums and this has resulted in big improvements to our patients’ overall oral hygiene.

The Dental and Hygiene Department has also played a crucial role in the introduction of stress-free dentistry to children. We believe it is one of the reasons why we continue to see several generations of the same family in the practice as well as a substantial number of new patients on a regular basis.

How To Brush and Floss

Brush daily with a good toothpaste. We recommend the following method to maintain dental health and help rid your mouth of plaque.

  • Place your toothbrush beside your teeth with the brush tips at a 45 degree angle against your gum.
  • Move the brush back and forth in short, semi-circle strokes several times.
  • Brush the outer surfaces of each tooth, top and bottom, keeping the bristles angled against your gum.
  • Use the same method on the inside surfaces of all the teeth, still using short back and forth strokes.
  • It is important to brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth as well.
  • Don’t forget your tongue, brushing it will help freshen your breath and remove bacteria.
  • Daily flossing removes plaque from between the teeth, areas where gum disease can begin.

Wind roughly 20cm of floss around middle fingers of each hand. Hold each end of the floss between your thumbs and index fingers, leaving about 2-3cm of length between. Use your thumbs to direct the floss between your upper teeth.

  • Keeping the floss nice and firm between fingers, use the index finger to direct the floss between the lower teeth.
  • Gently guide the floss between the teeth by using a zig zag motion. It is important to remember not to snap the floss between your teeth but use a smooth and flowing motion around each side of the tooth.
  • Slide the floss up and down against your tooth surface and under the gum.
